A Beautiful Alpine Pearl in Southern Piedmont

Limone Piemonte is the kind of alpine town that blends Italian charm with breathtaking mountain views, all just under two hours from Turin.

Nestled in the Vermenagna Valley at 1,000 meters, it offers something in every season. I’ve visited both in winter and summer, but for me, summer stands out by far. But I am no skier.

The hiking trails are spectacular, the scenery very beautiful, and the relaxed pace makes it the perfect warm-weather escape. In this post, I’ll share why summer in Limone is truly special and which hikes and hidden corners you shouldn’t miss.

Limone Piemonte Overview

Limone Piemonte is a small town in the Italian province of Cuneo, southern Piedmont, with a population of just below 1500.

Nestled in the Maritime Alps, the town sits near the French border and is connected to both the Ligurian Riviera and the Côte d’Azur via the Colle di Tenda international tunnel (re-opened mid-july 2025).

Limone Piemonte lies at the far end of the Vermenagna Valley, surrounded by towering mountains like Costa Rossa (2,404 m), Cima della Fascia (2,495 m), and Rocca dell’Abisso (2,755 m).

Thanks to its stunning location and its charming historic center, Limone is often referred to as the “Queen of the Maritime Alps.”

Things to See in Limone Piemonte

The village heart of Limone Piemonte is a sight in itself. Its car-free streets are beautifully maintained, decorated with vibrant flowers and charming floral touches everywhere you look.

While the town has plenty of hotels, guesthouses, and tourist amenities, they’re housed in carefully restored historic buildings. This thoughtful approach keeps the village’s character intact and preserves the charm of its old-world vibe.

One of the best-preserved examples of medieval architecture in the area is the Parish Church of San Pietro in Vincoli.

Other noteworthy churches include the Capuchin Monastery Church from the 18th century, the Church of Sant’Antonio da Padova built in 1657, and the Chapel of San Giovanni Battista dating back to 1614.

There’s also an interesting little museum in the town center: the Ski Museum. Since 2012, it has showcased the history of the local ski area, Riserva Bianca, through thousands of documents, photos, and videos.

Limone Piemonte is a paradise for hikers and mountain bikers, with a vast network of trails to explore.

Many of the most scenic routes run along the border ridge between Italy and France, offering stunning views and passing by impressive 19th-century military fortifications.

No need to drive to reach the mountains from the village center! A budget-friendly shuttle runs multiple times a day to Limonetto and Quota 1400.

From Quota 1400, a chairlift takes you up to the Baita 2000 mountain station, where the Alta Via del Sale trail begins.

Colle di Tenda / Tenda Pass

The Tenda Pass is located 14 km from the village center at an altitude of 1,871 meters, marking the historic border between Italy and France.

Since the severe storms of 2020, the old pass road has been closed to general traffic, but the Colle di Tenda tunnel reopened to vehicles in mid-2025. The Tenda railway is operational, connecting the two countries.

Surrounding the pass on the border ridge are six 19th-century military fort ruins, which can be easily explored on foot or by mountain bike.

The Colle di Tenda is also a starting point for many high-altitude adventures, including the ascent to Rocca dell’Abisso, standing tall at 2,755 meters and offering breathtaking views over the valleys below ⇒ One of my favorite hikes in Piedmont!

Alta Via del Sale

The Alta Via del Sale (High Salt Road), also known as the Ligurian Border Ridge Road, is the most popular route in the area.

This unpaved, spectacular former military road runs along the watershed at elevations between 1,800 and 2,100 meters.

There are several alternative and connecting routes, but the most breathtaking (and fee-based) section begins just beyond the Colle di Tenda and stretches 30 km to Monesi di Triora, a remote village in Liguria’s mountainous hinterland.

The Via del Sale is open to both hikers and motorized vehicles, offering a unique way to experience its incredible scenery!

Limone Piemonte in Winter

Limone Piemonte, together with its neighbor Prato Nevoso, is one of the most important ski resorts in the Cuneo province. Around 80 km of slopes are spread across three zones: Limone-Sole, Tre Amis, and Limonetto.

With over 15 lifts and gondolas, skiers and snowboarders can access 4 beginner slopes, 21 intermediate runs, and 11 challenging black pistes.

The ski season typically runs from early December to late March, making it a prime destination for winter sports enthusiasts.

There’s also a free ski shuttle that runs from the center of Limone Piemonte to the various lift stations further up the valley, making it super convenient to hit the slopes without needing a car!

Limone Piemonte, an “Alpine Pearl”

The Alpine Pearls is a cooperative network of alpine destinations committed to promoting environmentally friendly and sustainable tourism, with a strong focus on eco-friendly and soft mobility.

Since its founding in 2006, this unique cross-border initiative has been working to support green travel across the Alps. Currently, there are 18 Alpine Pearls spread across five alpine countries, and Limone Piemonte is proud to be one of them.

Starting with car-free travel, the Pearls have to offer guests a range of sustainable mobility options on-site. These include shuttle services, hiking and ski buses, taxis, electric cars, mountain bikes, and e-bikes.

In addition to this mobility concept, the Alpine Pearls aim to promote high-quality tourism by minimizing environmental impact as much as possible.

This commitment extends to other aspects of daily life, such as landscape preservation, nature conservation, renewable energy use, waste reduction, and supporting local products.

How to get to Limone Piemonte

Arrival by Train: As a member of the Alpine Pearls, Limone Piemonte encourages guests to travel by train. The train station, conveniently located near the village center, receives direct trains from Ventimiglia and Cuneo.

Travelers from Turin need to change trains in Fossano or Cuneo, while those coming from Genoa should transfer in Savona or Fossano.

Arrival by Car: For those driving, the journey from Cuneo takes about 30 minutes.
From Turin, the drive via the A6 toll highway is 120 km and takes approximately 1 hour 35 minutes.

If you’re traveling from France or Ventimiglia, the main route is through the Roya Valley and the Colle di Tenda Tunnel.

Parking in Limone Piemonte: There are plenty of free parking spots available around the village center.

If you’re heading toward the Colle di Tenda, you can drive a regular car as far as Chalet Marmotte, where free parking is available.

Beyond that, the gravel roads starting at the Tenda Pass are suitable only for 4×4 vehicles.
